A 3D/4D keepsake ultrasound in Metro Vancouver costs about $145 to $200 for a standard session. Short heartbeat or gender sessions cost $50 to $135, and two-visit packages run from $299 to $380. For 3D pictures of your baby’s face, studios recommend going between about 24 and 32 weeks.

This guide compares every studio’s published prices, explains what the package names mean, and sets out when to go for what you want to see. Prices are in Canadian dollars, read from each studio’s website on 9 October 2026.

What can make the bill higher or lower

  • Tax. Discovery 3D Ultrasound lists its prices before 5% tax. Ask each studio whether tax is included.
  • Twins. Discovery charges $100 to $135 for twins. Hi Baby charges double.
  • Add-ons. Extra prints, video and keepsakes are sold separately at some studios; Discovery lists add-ons from $10 to $50.
  • Location specials. UC Baby publishes specials for each location alongside its regular list, and Hi Baby advertises a coupon on request. The same package can cost different amounts at different branches of a chain: UC Baby’s Elite package (Bronze plus Silver) is $360 in Surrey and $299 in Burnaby and Richmond.

2D, 3D, 4D, 5D: what the names mean

  • 2D is the flat black-and-white image used in medical scans. Heartbeat, early and most gender sessions use it.
  • 3D builds a still picture with depth, so you can see the shape of the face.
  • 4D is 3D in motion: a live video of the baby moving.
  • 5D or HD is a studio name for 3D/4D with more lifelike lighting and skin tone. It is a rendering style, not a different kind of scan.

When is the best time for a 3D ultrasound?

It depends on what you want to see. This is what the studios themselves advise:

What you wantWeeksWho says so
Hear the heartbeatFrom 6 to 8 weeksDiscovery (6–10), UC Baby (from 8)
Early look12 to 16 weeksUC Baby
Find out the sexFrom 16 weeksUC Baby, Discovery, Hi Baby; 3D Mom and Baby says 18+
See the whole baby16 to 20 weeksDiscovery
3D pictures of the faceAbout 24 to 32 weeksCB Femi’s (24–28), UC Baby Richmond (24–32), Discovery (25–30), Hi Baby (27–32), 3D Mom and Baby (26–34)
Baby’s position32 weeks and later3D Mom and Baby

Earlier than about 24 weeks the baby has little fat under the skin, so the face looks thin in 3D. After about 30 to 32 weeks there is less room and fluid around the baby, and clear face pictures get harder to capture. That is why most studios point to the weeks in between.

What if the baby will not show their face?

It happens: the baby may face the spine or keep a hand in the way. 3D Mom and Baby says it reschedules for free if the baby’s face is hidden. Ask every studio what its policy is before you pay, and whether a return visit has a time limit.

Is a keepsake ultrasound safe?

Health Canada’s position has two parts, and it is worth reading both.

  • Diagnostic fetal ultrasound “has an excellent safety record when performed by qualified health professionals”.
  • Using ultrasound to make keepsake videos “is discouraged because it exposes the fetus to ultrasound without any medical benefit”, and the long-term effects of repeated or prolonged exposure in non-clinical use “are not known”.

The decision is yours. If you go, a shorter session at a studio that tells you who is doing the scan is the cautious choice. Our longer guide covers this in detail: 3D/4D keepsake ultrasound is not a medical scan.

Keepsake session or medical scan?

A keepsake session gives you pictures and video. It does not check the baby’s health, there is no report, and it does not replace the scans your doctor or midwife orders.

Two things people often do not know:

  • You may be able to learn the sex at your medical scan. Valley Medical Imaging in Langley, for example, says fetal sex can be determined on request during an obstetric scan.
  • Some medical clinics also sell keepsake sessions. Vancouver Ultrasound, Fast Track Ultrasound and CB Femi’s Health run diagnostic services and offer 3D/4D pregnancy packages too.

Is a 3D/4D ultrasound covered by MSP? Do you need a referral?

No to both. Keepsake ultrasound is a non-medical service that you pay for yourself, and no requisition is needed. The studio will ask how many weeks pregnant you are, because the right package depends on it.

How to book, and how to reach each studio

  • Online or by phone: UC Baby, Discovery, Hi Baby and 3D Mom and Baby all take bookings both ways. Discovery has no fixed hours; available times show in its online booking.
  • By message: Hi Baby and CB Femi’s take WeChat; Hi Baby and 3D Mom and Baby use WhatsApp; Discovery takes text messages.
  • In Chinese: CB Femi’s website is in Chinese, and UC Baby’s Richmond page has a Simplified Chinese version.
  • From this site: see all 3D/4D keepsake studios or send a quick appointment request.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. How many minutes is the session, and how many photos and how much video do I take home?
  2. Is tax included? Are prints or video extra?
  3. If the baby is not in a good position, can I come back free?
  4. Who performs the scan, and what is their training?
  5. How many people can I bring?
